Essex County College celebrated the opening of its renovated Center for Technology on September 16, 2026, bringing a renewed educational facility into use at its Newark campus. Netta Architects served as project architect for the renovation and joined the college community for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Renewing a campus building around learning

The project reflects a practical challenge for higher education institutions: adapting existing buildings as teaching methods and technology change. For Essex County College, the renovation created an opportunity to reconsider how the Center for Technology could serve students within its established campus setting.

The design brief called for reorganized classrooms, computer labs and specialized laboratory layouts, an additional classroom, and a learning community space. It also addressed restroom updates and improvements to the main entrance. Together, these priorities connected instructional needs with the everyday experience of using the building.

Connecting instruction with practical experience

The college reports that the completed center includes new computers and engineering 3D printers. These resources support hands-on learning and career preparation, giving students opportunities to apply what they study through work with technology.

For a campus renovation, the relationship between equipment and space matters. Teaching areas need to accommodate both instruction and the activities that follow it. The Center for Technology’s design brief placed those needs within a broader renewal of the building.

Marking the next chapter

The ribbon cutting recognized the work of the college and its project partners in bringing the renovation to completion. The ceremony program included a project design and vision presentation by Netta Architects, followed by a ribbon cutting, tours, and a reception.

For Netta Architects, the Center for Technology adds to the firm’s work with Essex County College, which also includes the West Essex Campus in West Caldwell. Each project responds to a different campus context while supporting the college’s educational mission.
